Jeff Buckley - Madame George (Van Morrison cover)
I remember people crying at school when Jeff Buckley died, just like I remember girls reading poems out in English class about Kurt Cobain. I’m never exactly sure where I stand when it comes to his body of work - some of it is massively overrated; some of it is used as a weapon of terror by “romantic” guys who like to light candles in the bedroom - but his cover of Van’s best/favourite song sure is a transcendent piece of cathartic miserablism.
Jeff Buckley only released 2 brilliant EPs; Live at Sin-é and Live from the Bataclan, and the groundbreaking Grace. The rest of “his” catalogue represents the worst kind of profiteering by his estate, although some of it provides an interesting window into his creative process.
Seeing Buckley live was spiritual, naff as that sounds. This duet with Alim Qasimov offers some small sense of the experience: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SplirA-RBa4
